南科大之后，探索开始铺开。2013年先是上海科技大学成立。五年后，西湖大学获教育部批准设立，成为新中国成立以来第一所由社会力量举办、国家重点支持的非营利性新型高等学校。中国科学院院士施一公出任校长。与南科大、上科大不同，西湖大学采用“基金会办学”模式。这标志着新型研究型大学的办学主体开始多元化。
